While previously we have openly discussed the soaring popularity Islamic online dating and the ever swelling outcry for a 100% Free Muslim Dating Site, a topic we are yet to cover is that of modern generation Muslims whom are interested in ‘dating’ yet are unable to due to their parents being more of the ‘traditional’ side of the subject.
As a young person – whether Muslim or not – it can be incredibly frustrating dealing with parents who do not share your views on the world and whom, for better or worse, believe that decisions pertaining to the way you live your life are best handled exclusively by them. While this can be undeniably annoying the fact is, particularly in a Muslim family, your parents demand to be treated with and spoken to with supreme respect at all times and require you to not question their decisions.
So, does this mean that you’re doomed to never express yourself or have your voice and opinions heard? Thankfully, the answer to that question is a resounding ‘of course not!’ but when you do decide to speak to your parents – whether it be about being allowed to go on a Muslim Date or any other topic that matters to you – the trick is to broach the topic with respect and courtesy always at the forefront of your mind.
Here are a few tips on how to present yourself and approach talking to your parents about dating.
- Be Respectful
First and foremost comes respect. If you wish to have your opinions considered and seen as valid, you need to approach the conversation in a very mature way and speak with a respectful tone. Any sign of immaturity, regardless of your age, is likely to see your point shot down before it even leaves your mouth.
- Right Time, Right Place
Obviously most of us have the ability to feel when it is a ‘bad time,’ to bring up a sensitive or new topic with someone. Ensure that when talking to your parents, particularly about the topic of whether or not you’re allowed to date, that you’re in a neutral, stress-free environment and that everyone appears to be in good spirits.
- Pick Your Battles
If you know that you’re planning a big chat with your parents in the near future, feel free to let other little things that they may say or do that may have previously bugged you slide. You’ll appear mature and level-headed – attributes that best describe a guy or girl who is capable of making some wise decisions on their own, right?
Now they are just a few tips on talking to your parents but if you utilise them next time you have a problem or opinion you’d like to convey, we think you’ll find that you’ll receive a much more favourable reception than when employing the sulking approach!
